Day 2: Luang PrabangArrive and transfer to Luang Prabang’s historic centre and stay at the Sanctuary Hotel for 2 nights. (N)
Day 3: Luang PrabangOptional early morning start to participate in the daily ritual of alms giving, when saffron-clad monks receive offerings from faithful residents. Afterwards, begin a tour of the ancient temple district, visiting Buddhist temples and the National Museum, housed in a former royal palace. Afternoon visit to the scenic Khuang Si waterfalls. (B, L)
Day 4: Pak BengDrive north from Luang Prabang and into the jungle. Make a stop at the Kacham waterfall then continue to the small jungle town of Sayaboury for lunch at a restaurant overlooking the Nam Heung river. Continue north via various villages of the Phai and Hmong minority ethnic groups, who still follow a traditional way of life in many ways, before arriving in the small riverside town of Pak Beng. Stay overnight at the Le Grand Pakbeng Resort for 2 nights. (B, L)
Day 5: Pak BengMorning visit to a traditional village near Pak Beng to learn about local life, then afternoon at leisure to explore Pak Beng. (B)
Day 6: Luang PrabangBoard the Luang Say cruiser for the journey down the Mekong back to Luang Prabang. Stop en route at the Pak Ou caves, which contain thousands of Buddha images and are of great religious importance to Theravada Buddhists in Laos. Stay 1 night at the Sanctuary Hotel (B, L)
Day 7: Fly to PakseFly to Pakse in southern Laos. On arrival, drive out into the countryside to the small riverside town of Muang Champasak and stay at the River Resort for 2 nights. Afternoon visit to the nearby Vat Phou temple complex, which was once part of the ancient Khmer empire and is thought to pre-date the celebrated Angkor temples in Cambodia. (B)
Day 8: 4,000 Islands regionSpend today exploring the 4,000 Islands region of southern Laos near the border with Cambodia. Discover this remote natural landscape and visit the mighty Khone Phapheng falls. The excursions today will be by large river cruiser, smaller local boats and bus. (B, L)
Days 9-10: Bolaven plateauDrive east to the Bolaven plateau, which is located off the beaten track between the Annamite mountains and the Mekong river. Attractions include the plateau’s many waterfalls, villages of minority ethnic groups, and tours and tastings at coffee plantations. Stay 2 nights at the Sinouk Coffee Resort, which offers simple accommodation set in beautiful gardens with a small lake and its own coffee plantation. (B, L, D)
Day 11: ThailandMorning at leisure. Drive north to Chong Mek on the border with Thailand. Cross the border and continue to the Tohsang Khongjiam Resort, located on the banks of the Mekong river in Khongjiam district, for a 1-night stay. (B)
Days 12-13: Fly home via BangkokTransfer from your hotel to Ubon Ratchathani airport for a flight to Bangkok where you can connect with a flight home. (B) (N)
