(N)Day 2: Tokyo
You will be met on arrival and transferred to the Asakusa View Hotel for 4 nights. The hotel is located in Asakusa, one of the oldest parts of the city with lots of character and good transport links. (N)Days 3-5: Tokyo
Today you will have the services of a guide for a full day, who will help you orientate yourselves while you visit some of Tokyo’s highlights. The following day is at leisure; a range of optional activities and experiences can be pre-booked including lessons in Japanese drumming and cooking. On your final day in Tokyo, a guide has been booked for the morning to escort you on a visit to a sumo wrestling training centre. (B)Day 4: Hakone
Drive south-west from Tokyo into Hakone National Park, a picturesque landscape of lakes, green valleys and volcanic hot springs. Stay overnight at one of the best ryokans in Japan, Gora Kadan, the former retreat of the imperial family and now a luxurious Relais & Châteaux property. Rooms are available here with private outdoor onsen (hot springs), or there is a luxury spa and access nearby to fishing, golf and hiking trails. (B, D)Days 5-6: Kyoto
Private transfer to Odawara station, then board a shinkansen (bullet train) for the journey south to Kyoto. You will be met on the platform by your guide, who will accompany you throughout your time in the city. Your itinerary and sightseeing will be tailor-made to your interests and requirements. Either let the guide introduce you to the cultural highlights of the city or structure travels around a theme: focus on Kyoto’s best gardens; join an expert potter and gallery owner for a tour of Kyoto’s ceramic legacy; discover local crafts such as ukiyo-e woodblock prints, Japanese dollmaking, roketsu indigo dyeing or kanoko-shibori tie dyeing; or enjoy touring Kyoto’s best sake district and the wonderful Fushimi Inari shrine, dedicated to the rice gods. Stay 3 nights at the Hyatt Regency Kyoto. (B)Days 6-7: Hakone National Park
Take a train from Shinjuku Station direct to Hakone National Park. A 2-day ‘Hakone Free Pass’ will be provided to explore the area. Take a boat trip across Lake Ashi, visit the open-air sculpture and art museum, or visit a hot spring theme park. Stay 2 nights at the traditional Mikawaya Ryokan. (B)Day 7: Nara
Take a day trip outside the city to Nara, travelling by taxi to Kyoto station then on to Nara by train. Visit Kofukuji temple, the many pagodas in the park and Naramachi, a part of Nara’s old town. Other options include Todaiji museum and the Nigatsudo pavilion. Your guide will be able to explain all about the history of ancient Nara and the numerous world heritage sights. (B)Day 8: To Kyoto
Transfer to Odawara train station and board a shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto. Stay at the Hyatt Regency Kyoto for 4 nights. (B)Day 9: Osaka
Board a shinkansen for the final leg of your journey to Osaka. You will be met on the platform and taken by private car to the St Regis Hotel Osaka for a 1-night stay. The guide will also be available to help you explore the city this afternoon. (B)Days 12-13: Takayama
Take a bullet train into the Japanese Alps and stay at the Tanabe Ryokan in Takayama for 2 nights. The following morning, take a cycling tour in the countryside, escorted by a private guide. (B)Day 14: Tokyo
Return to Tokyo for your final night in Japan, staying at the Century Southern Tower hotel. A reservation will be made for you at the Robot Restaurant, a unique Japanese ‘robot cabaret’ experience with dancers, lasers and strobe lights. (B)Day 15: Fly home

The Tanabe Ryokan is situated in the old town part of Takayama close to the temple area, the morning markets and a short walk from Takayama Station. The ryokan is an excellent place to experience traditional Japanese hospitality.
Dating from 1883, Mikawaya Ryokan is a charming traditional guesthouse on the slopes on Hakone mountain, with superb views of the Myojingatake, Daimonji and Sengen mountains.
