The Eastern & Oriental hotel is a historical landmark in Penang. The city has long been the home of international traders, among them four Armenian brothers called the Sarkies. The brothers would establish some of the world’s greatest hotels in the east, including Raffles in Singapore and The Strand in Rangoon. However, the first of these in 1885 was the Eastern & Oriental Hotel on the Penang waterfront. Once noted as ‘the premier hotel east of Suez’, it has been restored to its former glory. Through the years, the hotel has welcomed the glitterati of the literary and entertainment worlds, including Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Noel Coward, Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham and Hermann Hesse. Accommodation is available in two areas of the hotel: the Heritage Wing and the Victory Annexe.
The Heritage Wing is the historical heart of the hotel, dating back to 1885, with Moorish minarets and a soaring echo-dome lobby. Khaki-clad doormen and pith-helmeted bellhops welcome guests to its 100 elegant suites. Attended by a legendary butler service, each suite takes you back to the refined elegance and colonial grandeur of a golden age.
The Victory Annexe features 118 Studio Suites and 4 Corner Suites. Built in a modern, classic design, the annexe retains the essence of Eastern &Oriental’s rich heritage while offering the modern business traveller state-of-the-art conveniences including wireless internet access, a fully-equipped gym and an infinity pool with an extensive view of the Andaman sea.
