With a troubled recent history, Laos has only recently opened up to the outside world and is one of the most unspoilt countries in Asia. Vientiane, situated on the banks of the Mekong River, is Laos’ small capital city. It has a mixture of ornate temples, faded colonial French architecture, markets, silkweaving galleries and cafes and restaurants on the banks of the wide Mekong.
