Yudanaka is located close to the city of Nagano and is easily accessible from Tokyo by train. The area is known for its population of much-photographed Japanese macaques, or ‘snow monkeys’, which can often be seen bathing in the hot spring waters in Jigokudani Yaen Koen, the Wild Snow Monkey Park. The macaques can be seen year-round but are usually seen bathing during the cold winter months. Yudanaka is also a popular hot spring resort, with a history dating back several hundred years and many traditional wooden buildings. Make sure to visit one of the public hot spring bathing facilities, known as onsen, or stay in one of the many hotels and ryokans that have their own private bathing facilities.
