The Sapporo Grand Hotel is the oldest western-style hotel in Hokkaido, built in 1934 at the behest of Prince Chichibu so that foreign visitors to Japan could better enjoy the island's skiing. Today, the hotel has a large range of elegant rooms and an extensive array of facilities including a shopping arcade, small museum with exhibits on the history of Hokkaido, a spa and even a chapel. There are three restaurants serving Chinese and local Hokkaido cuisine, two lounges including a 1930s-style saloon, and a bar. The hotel is handily located right by Sapporo station, reached by an underground passage connecting the station and the hotel.
