Eko-in provides shukubo, or 'temple lodgings', in a 100-year-old temple on Mount Koya. The temple has origins stretching back almost 1,200 years, when a Japanese monk by the name of Kukai was said to have erected a Buddhist stupa on the site. There are 35 rooms available, all with tatami mat flooring, comfortable futon bedding and paper sliding screens. Bathroom facilities are shared. The temple has pleasant gardens and a cafeteria where Buddhist vegetarian cuisine is served at scheduled times. Guests are welcome to attend the temple's early morning Buddhist chanting and 'goma' fire ritual.
