From the frenetic capital of Tokyo to the natural wonders of Mount Fuji, you are almost guaranteed not to run out of things to see and experience on a tailor-made itinerary to Japan.
For first-time visitors, we recommend taking in some of the main sites and experiences: Tokyo’s bustling Shinjuku district and trying samples at the Tsukiji fish market; take a cable-car ride in Hakone National Park for views of Mount Fuji; and experience a traditional tea ceremony in Kyoto’s Gion district, famous for geishas and maikos (geishas in training).
Alternatively, go off the beaten track and explore more of Japan’s cultural treasures. Travel to Nara, Japan’s first capital but today a small town famous for its deer park as well as shrines and temples, among which are a total of eight Unesco world heritage sites.
We also recommend travelling to Hiroshima, now a vibrant city which still remembers the Second World War in the Peace Memorial Park. Close to Hiroshima is Miyajima Island, where the famous floating shrine, Torii Gate, is located. This is a good place to experience traditional Japanese hospitality and stay in a ryokan.
For those seeking a touch of nature, journey to the island of Hokkaido in the far north, from Sapporo. It has spectacular mountainous scenery with lakes, gorges, waterfalls, and beautiful flora and fauna. It’s a great place to enjoy a more isolated experience. Go hiking and birdwatching in the national parks; stop in small fishing towns; visit the world’s first underwater drift ice observatory; or venture out into the Sea of Okhotsk on a cruise.
