Originally built in 1910 by the famous Sarkies brothers and named Hotel Oranjes after the Dutch Royal family, the Hotel Majapahit was later renamed after the kingdom of Majapahit and is centrally located in the downtown area of Surabaya. Set amongst its own manicured gardens the classical colonial building has 143 spacious and luxurious guestrooms and suites overlooking garden courtyards, equipped with en-suite facilities with marble bathrooms, antique furnishings and cable television.
The hotel's art deco restaurant serves a variety of Indonesian, Asian and Western cuisine, while the hotel Spa by Martha Tilaar, offers a wide range of treatments and massages. Other hotel facilities include a fully equipped fitness centre, tennis courts and swimming pool. The hotel also retains many historic architectural features including stained glass windows, terrazzo flooring and colonial era balconies and verandas. Of particular historical importance, the hotel was the focal point for pro-independence forces in 1945, who grabbed the Dutch flag flown by the hotel ripping the blue part off to change it to the Indonesian flag before the battle began.
