Accommodation rating: Superior
Kura Kura Resort occupies the entire Menjawakan Island in the Karimunjawa Archipelago, north of Java. Reached by a 35 minute flight from Semarang on the mainland, and then a boat transfer, Menjawakan is a lush, private tropical island of 22 hectares, and one of the largest lagoons in the archipelago. Accommodation is in cottages or pool villas, just metres from the beach with unobstructed views over the crystal clear waters. All are equipped with air-conditioning, mosquito net, ceiling fan, king size bed and minibar.
The name Kura Kura means 'Sea Turtle' in Bahasa Indonesian, and the Island is a nesting site for turtles due to a sanctuary that has been created here and where they are protected until they take to the sea. Snokelling, kayaking and sunset cruises can all be arranged, or you can be dropped off at an outlying island for the day with coconut trees, white sandy beaches, lunch and cold drinks.
Located 30 minutes by boat from the resort, guests can also stay overnight on a tropical island where the basic one room accommodation (with separate toilet and shower) offers the once in a lifetime experience of having a beautiful desert island all to yourself. No electricity or kitchen facilities are available, in keeping with the unspoilt nature of the experience, but lamps, torches, candles and a picnic hamper are provided.
