Natural Wonders of China

The vast country of China encompasses breathtaking landscapes. This journey visits some of its finest scenery including the enchanting Huangshan mountain range, reminiscent of scenes from traditional Chinese paintings; Qing Cheng mountain near Chengdu, one of the birthplaces of Taoism; and the picturesque rural settings of Wuyuan county. Combine these natural wonders with cultural visits to cosmopolitan Shanghai, ancient Xian and Beijing, with its many fascinating sights.

Arrive and transfer to The Banyan Tree Shanghai on the Bund for 2 nights, which has a prime location in the northern Bund area along the Huangpu river. (N)

Morning visit to Jade Buddha temple and Yu garden. Afternoon at leisure to stroll along the Bund or shop on Nanjing Road. (B)

DAY 4: Train to Huangshan

High-speed train to Huangshan, tour the ancient street of Tunxi, then drive into Yixian County and stay at the Banyan Tree Huangshan for 2 nights, located at the foot of Mount Huangshan. (B)

DAY 5: Huangshan

Take the cable car up Mount Huangshan for some superb views of the surrounding countryside. Visit Lion Peak, Flower-Scattering Valley and the Cloud-Dispelling Pavilion. (B, L)

DAY 6: Wuyuan

Leave The Banyan Tree Huangshan and visit the villages of Lucun and Hongcun, known for their beautiful wood carvings and well-preserved traditional buildings. Afterwards, drive south into Wuyuan county to the tiny village of Yan, a protected 900-year-old settlement. Stay here for 2 nights at the Skywells Wuyuan, a rare 300-year-old courtyard mansion that has been lovingly restored using traditional building techniques, retaining many original features.

DAY 8: Fly to Chengdu/Qing Cheng Mountain

Drive to Hangzhou airport and fly to Chengdu. (At Hangzhou you can extend your trip with a visit to the scenic West Lake and the Dragon Well Tea Estate – please enquire for details). On arrival in Chengdu, you will be met and driven south of the city to the Six Senses Qing Cheng Mountain for a 3-night stay. (B)

Spend two days exploring the countryside near Qing Cheng mountain. Take a hike on the mountain, visit the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project, or see pandas at the Dujiangyan Research Center of Giant Panda Breeding. (B)

DAY 11: Xian & the Terracotta Warriors

Travel by high-speed train from Chengdu to Xian. This former Silk Road trading city retains some of its historic character, laid out in a grid pattern within huge perimeter walls. On arrival you will be met and transferred north of the city for a 2-night stay at the award-winning spa hotel Angsana Xian Lintong, which lies in the shadow of Lishan mountain, just 15 minutes from the legendary Terracotta Warriors.

DAY 15: Great Wall of China

Leave Beijing for a journey to the Great Wall at Huanghuacheng, a quiet section adjoining the peaceful Haoming lake. Walking on the wall here is difficult, but a visit is rewarding as the scenery is particularly beautiful and the area little-visited. (B, L)
