A new direct flight route from London Gatwick to Changsha with Hainan Airlines has opened up access to the fascinating province of Hunan. Changsha has a rich cultural and political heritage, famous in China because Mao Zedong was born in the nearby town of Shaoshan, while the striking Wulingyuan Scenic Area is easily accessible from Changsha.
Arrive and transfer to the Niccolo Changsha for 1 night, a luxury hotel situated in the upper floors of Tower One of the Changsha IFS complex, which encompasses a range of restaurants, bars and shops. (N)
Morning visit to Orange Island Park, an island in the Xiang river with gardens, pavilions, sculptures and groves of thousands of orange trees. In the afternoon, drive north into the Wulingyuan Scenic Area and stay at the Pullman Zhangjiajie Hotel for 2 nights. Full-day tour of the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park region of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area. Begin with a visit to Jinbian (Golden Whip) Stream, a beautiful valley rich with rare and exotic plants. Continue to Tianzi (Son of Heaven) Mountain, a scenic area with many viewpoints from where you can enjoy views of the misty peaks and strange rock formations. End with a visit to Yuanjiajie Scenic Area, a region that became famous as a filming location for the Avatar movie, and where a multitude of peaks and rocks arise from the valleys below. (B, L)
Morning visit to Tianmen Shan, the highest mountain in the region. At a length of 7,200 metres, the cable car here is one of the longest in the world and travels through spectacular scenery. Afternoon drive to Fenghuang, also known as Phoenix Ancient Town, and stay at the Sulv Lianhua Hotel for 1 night. (B, L)
Morning walking tour of the historic centre of Fenghuang, then take a boat ride along the Tuo river. Afternoon drive back to Changsha and stay 3 nights at the Niccolo Changsha. (B, L)
