While the magnificent temples of Angkor are a definite must-see in Cambodia, there is plenty more to experience on a tailor-made itinerary.
Siem Reap is the gateway to the Angkor Archaeological Park, home to the Khmer Empire that flourished in the ninth century until the 15th century. Temples we recommend visiting in this ancient city include the iconic Angkor Wat; Ta Prohm temple, romantically enveloped by jungle; and the nearby complex of Banteay Srei with its intricate wall carvings. Seeing the sunrise at Angkor Wat is arguably one of the main highlights of a visit to the park; admire the temple’s reflection rippling in the pond below as the first rays of the day appear from behind.
It is also worth travelling to the capital, Phnom Penh, to find out more about the horrors of Cambodia’s recent history. Tour the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum and take an audio tour of the Choeung Ek killing fields.
Journey towards Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in south-east Asia. Here you can cruise the lake to see the numerous floating fishing villages and get an insight into local life as families take their children to school or go to church. Alternatively, escape to the Cardamom Mountains and explore the waterfalls, river valleys and wildlife found here, such as tigers and Asian elephants. For a relaxing end to a tailor-made itinerary to Cambodia, drive south from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville, where you can explore nearby islands by boat or walk along the many white sand beaches.
