Travel by skiff boat to Binh Thanh island, where the villagers weave mats and baskets from Mekong river reeds and water hyacinths, or opt to visit the small town of Sa Dec, where you may peruse the vibrant market and see the house of Marguerite Duras' legendary lover, Mr Huynh Thuy Le. In the afternoon, visit a typical Mekong delta village called My An Hung, and walk through verdant plantations. Visit a local's home to taste fruits from the surrounding plantations, and listen to traditional folk songs performed by villagers followed by a unique unicorn dance. A 17-kilometre cycling option is also available. (B, L, D)
Travel by skiff along the Bassac canal to Chau Doc floating market, then continue by road to the 230-metre-high Sam Mountain, the highest point in the Mekong delta and home to dozens of pagodas that dot the mountainside. Make an easy climb to the mountaintop for superb views of the surrounding countryside, which, on a clear day, reach as far as Cambodia. As this is border territory, there is a military outpost on the summit, a legacy of the Khmer Rouge era that confers a slightly anachronistic aura. Return via the bustling morning market. An optional 18-kilometre bike ride on Long Khanh island is available later this morning, or take a rickshaw ride to visit Tan Chau market with the boat chef. (B, L, D)
Explore the island of Oknha Tey by tuk-tuk and visit a village where renowned weavers demonstrate their skills. A biking option is also available for those who wish to explore deeper into the island. Continue further north towards the remote village of Preah Prosop, home to typical Khmer stilt houses and where authentic Cambodian delta life remains untouched by the outside world. (B, L, D)
This morning sail into the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh, and take a two-wheeled motorised tuk-tuk tour of the city's most important sights, including the royal palace, the Silver Pagoda and the National Museum of Cambodia. Dinner is followed by a performance of traditional Apsara dance. (B, L, D)
Travel by skiff to Koh Chen, or 'Chinese Island' in Khmer language. This village is renowned throughout the region for its silversmiths and coppersmiths. Continue with an exploration of Khmer riverside life at Udong, the royal capital from the 17th to 19th centuries, where you will learn about a uniquely challenging Buddhist practice at the Vipassana Dhura Mandala, a meditation centre, followed by a walking tour of Kampong Prasat for a close up perspective on local lives. (B, L, D)
Early this morning, while the weather is cooler, head into the lush countryside to visit traditional potters and palm-sugar producers by mountain bike or chauffeured by shaded tuk-tuk. In the afternoon take an ox-cart ride along the Tonlé Sap riverbanks, past lacquered wooden houses where, during the dry months, residents take refuge in the relative cool of these impromptu outdoor living rooms. (B, L, D)
Disembark the Aqua Mekong this morning then begin the road journey to Siem Reap. The coach transfer will drop you off at the Park Hyatt Siem Reap, where you will stay for 3 nights. (B)
Full-day tour of the smaller temples of Angkor, including the Roluos Group, Banteay Srei, Preah Khan and Neak Pean. (B, L)
This morning, explore the picturesque temples of Ta Prohm and Prasat Tanei, where a light picnic breakfast is served. Continue to the jewel of the Khmer empire – Angkor Wat. In the afternoon, visit Angkor Thom, the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King. End the day at Bayon as its distinctive stone faces are softened by the light of the setting sun. (B)
Transfer to the airport and fly back to the UK. (B)
