Battambang, located by the Sangker river in north-west Cambodia, is the country’s second largest city and its surrounds are an important area for rice production. Established in the 11th century during the Khmer empire, the city was developed into an important trading post by the French in the early 20th century. Today, Battambang is home to some of the best-preserved French colonial architecture in the country.

The Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary is the most important breeding site for large water birds in south-east Asia. Many bird species have been driven away from neighbouring countries due to the threat from humans and loss of habitat. In 2001, the Wildlife Conservation Society set up a local conservation team to protect the colonies during the nesting seasons, and many endangered species are now thriving. Escorted by an expert local guide, cruise across Tonlé Lake to the sanctuary and spend a day spotting the various bird species. Look out for the black-headed ibis, painted storks, milky storks, spot-billed pelicans and the grey-headed fish eagle. The best time to visit is during the dry seaosn, which typically falls between December and May.
The small town of Battambang, west of Siem Reap, is home to an interesting museum that displays an array of sculptures and sandstone carvings collected from the various temples in the local area. There is also a section of the museum that details the history of local life and the colonial buildings. A short drive out of town is the temple of Wat Ek Phnom, which encompasses a modern pagoda situated in front of the original 11th-century ruins, although the main towers are still in a good condition. In the grounds opposite there is a large white statue of a sitting Buddha guarded by statues. A short drive from Wat Ek Phnom lies the hilltop temple of Wat Banan. Those who climb the 358 steps to the summit will be rewarded with spectacular views of the countryside below.
