Travel by road through rural Sarawak passing lush green paddies, pepper plantations and local villages. Stay at Seri Semanggang for two nights. (B, D)

Depart early to journey to Poring Hot Springs and take a walk around the beautiful compound. Continue to the nearby Kipungit Waterfall to admire this spectacular natural wonder. Resume the drive back to Kota Kinabalu, stopping at Mount Kinabalu National Park. (B, L)

Fly to Sandakan and transfer to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre to see the morning feeding of the reserve’s orangutans, which are being reintroduced into the wild. Visit the nearby Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, then stay one night at the Sepilok Nature Lodge. (B)

Rise early for a river cruise to Kelenanap Oxbow Lake. Visit a local fishing village, Kampung Abai and interact with local Orang Sungai, a river people who have long inhabited the area. After dinner head out on a night river safari to see some of the jungle’s nocturnal inhabitants. (B, L, D)
