Established in 1964, the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is one of only four orang utan sanctuaries in the world, with the aim of protecting orphaned, injured and captive orang utans and introducing them back into the wild. Every morning semi-wild orang utans descend from the trees in the surrounding jungle to feed, providing a unique chance to take photographs and get close to these iconic animals. A visit here also combines well with the nearby Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, a superb introduction to animal conservation in Borneo.
Sun bears are the smallest and least-known members of the bear species. Their populations are rapidly diminishing in south-east Asia as habitats are destroyed by deforestation and bears are killed for commercial exploitation. The mission of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) in Sepilok, Sabah, is to rescue captured sun bears and promote sun bear conservation in Borneo through animal welfare, conservation, rehabilitation, research and education programmes. There are currently 28 rescued bears at the BSBCC, which the centre aims to eventually reintroduce to the surrounding forest. A visit here is an opportunity to learn more about the animals and the work the centre is doing to protect them.
