Take a break from the city and jungle with a day trip by boat to the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, lying around 5km from the Kota Kinabalu shoreline. Named after the first prime minister of Malaysia, the park was set up to protect the habitats and marine life of five small islands, which are fringed by golden sands and coral reefs. This tour visits the island of Mamutik, a 15-minute boat ride from the mainland, where you can swim or snorkel in the South China Sea, relax on the beach, and enjoy a barbecue lunch under the casuarina trees.
Kinabalu National Park was one of Malaysia's first national parks and is now a Unesco world heritage site due to the diversity of habitats on and around the slopes of south-east Asia's highest mountain, Mount Kinabalu. The surrounding forests are some of the richest in the world, with more than 2,000 flowering plants including 1,200 species of orchid, various species of rhododendron, pitcher plants and the largest flower in the world, the rafflesia. Many of these species are cultivated in this 'mountain garden' and can be easily found in season from a marked nature trail through the forest with an experienced naturalist guide. For a different view of the forest, visit the Poring Hot Springs area where a canopy walkway has been built in the trees 41 metres above the forest floor, allowing the chance to see various species of lianas and epiphytes.
