The Danum Valley Conservation Area protects a pocket of primary rainforest the size of Singapore with one of the world’s most complex ecosystems, and contains the highest concentration of wild orang-utans anywhere. The only development in the reserve is a small guesthouse and field centre, which is one of the leading tropical rainforest research stations in South East Asia. Danum Valley is the largest remaining habitats for Borneo’s most endangered species including the Sumatran rhino, Borneo pygmy elephant and clouded leopard, and over 275 bird species have been recorded here.
