Located 300 miles from the coast of Argentina with vast open spaces and pristine beaches, the Falkland Islands are home to a fascinating array of animal and plant life. In this unpolluted environment in the South Atlantic, visitors can encounter five species of penguin as well as elephant seal, sea lion and a host of southern ocean bird species. Discover the interesting and often turbulent history of the Falklands on a journey to these welcoming islands.

The Falklands can be accessed via scheduled flights from Brazil or Chile, or on a direct charter from RAF Brize Norton. This weeklong journey includes stays in small lodges and travel by land and small aircraft for excellent views.

Standard Private Tour in brief

Day 1: Fly to Mount Pleasant

Fly with LAN from Sao Paulo in Brazil to Mount Pleasant on the Falkland Islands (it is also possible to fly from Santiago or Punta Arenas in Chile). Stay 1 night at Darwin House Lodge. (N)

Days 2 - 3: Fly to Bleaker Island

Fly to Bleaker Island and stay 2 nights at Cobb’s Cottage. This long and thin island is privately owned and run as an organic sheep and cattle farm. Take easy walks along the sandy beaches to see elephant seals, sea lions and abundant birdlife including Magellanic, rockhopper and gentoo penguins, imperial cormorants, white-tufted and silvery grebes and rare flying steamer ducks. Days 4 - 5: Fly to Sea Lion Island

Fly to Sea Lion Island, the most southerly of the inhabited Falkland Islands, for 2 nights at the Sea Lion Lodge. Take self guided walks to see amazing wild scenery, long sandy beaches and view wildlife, including the endangered striated caracara, Antarctic skua, and elephant seals. (B, L, D)

Alternatively, fly to picturesque Carcass Island in the northwest of the Falklands archipelago and stay for 2 nights at Carcass Cottage. The rolling hills and low cliffs here are superb platforms from which to view the multitude of sea and shore birds, including penguins, endangered striated caracara and pintail and steamer ducks, as well as elephant seals. It is possible to arrange an optional day trip by boat to nearby West Point Island to see the colony of black-browed albatross (subject to weather conditions). (B, L, D)

Days 6 -7:

Fly to Stanley, the small capital of the Falkland Islands, for 2 nights at the Malvina House hotel. Take a full day excursion to Volunteer Point to see the colony of king penguins, the second largest penguin species. (B)

Day 8: Fly to Santiago

Fly back to Brazil (or Chile) and continue your trip. (B)

    Sea Lion Lodge is one of the southernmost hotels in the world, and is also one of the most luxurious places to stay in the Falkland Islands. It was purpose built in 1986 and has central heating in every room; ensuite shower, sink and WC in the double room and the six twin rooms; and a shared shower, sink and WC for the two single rooms. All bedrooms have their own telephone with internet and fax facilities. There are two spacious and comfortable living rooms, equipped with a television, a well stocked library of wildlife books and a conservatory. The Lodge's bar offers an extensive range of wines, beers and spirits to enjoy after a wonderful day exploring the island.

    The Malvina House Hotel, built in the late 1960's, was converted into a hotel in 1983 and has since been extensively renovated. Located on Ross Road, it is within easy walking distance of all points of interest. With 18 rooms, it is the largest of the two hotels in Stanley. All rooms have private bathrooms. There is a bar-lounge and the Conservatory Restaurant provides dining in a relaxing atmosphere of plants and shrubs in the renovated original 19th century conservatory, with full a la carte menu.

    The purpose-built Cobb's Cottage (named after one of the island's previous owners) is located just a few minutes' walk away from the island's wildlife.
