Despite having a population of approximately three million, Kiev has a spacious and open feel. The colossal Soviet style housing blocks on the left bank of the Dnieper river give way to the old city with its parks, ancient churches, golden domes and elegant main street of Kreschatyk, on the right bank.
Many sights are within walking distance of the now famous Maiden Square, the site of two revolutions this century alone. Other highlights include the mummified nuns of the Pechersk Lavra Orthodox monastery and the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War.
