Vienna to Brașov by Rail

Explore celebrated and unsung cities in Austria, Hungary and Romania on this private rail holiday. Begin in Vienna, whose palaces reveal the Habsburg dynasty’s wealth and influence. Continue to Budapest, a chance to admire Hungary’s gothic parliament building, cruise the Danube, or unwind at a thermal spa. After marvelling at the Basilica in under-the-radar Esztergom, you finish in Transylvania with guided tours of charming Sibiu and Brasov.

Enjoy a day at leisure to explore the capital of Austria. As well as one of the world’s most livable cities, Vienna is considered a bastion of classical music, with Beethoven, Mozart, Strauss and Schubert among its former residents. The landmarks offer their own symphony: Romanesque, gothic, baroque and sky-high contemporary architecture. Worthy stops include the handsome historic centre, the Habsburg palaces of Schönbrunn and Hofburg, and St Stephen’s Cathedral with its head-turning roof. Be sure to try something delicious at one of the local konditoreien (patisseries). (B)

DAY 3: Bratislava / Sopron

Travel by train to visit either nearby Bratislava in Slovakia, home to attractive churches, castles, quaint cafes and a walkable old town; or the Hungarian town of Sopron and its equally picturesque historic centre; then return to Vienna for the night. Alternatively, spend the day exploring Vienna at leisure. (B)

Budapest

Your day is at leisure to explore Budapest, the capital of Hungary. The city has many draws, including a UNESCO-listed centre, the vast, gothic Hungarian Parliament Building, numerous hot springs and bath houses in which to enjoy them, the cupola-crowned Buda Castle, which offers an elevated view over the rooftops; and a wide stretch of the Danube – best experienced on a sightseeing boat tour. (B)

Esztergom

Take the train to Esztergom for a morning visit at leisure. Situated upriver from Budapest, this town is home to the hulking Basilica of Esztergom – a neoclassical marvel – and the neighbouring Castle of Esztergom, now a museum. Alternatively, continue exploring Budapest at leisure. This evening, board a sleeper train from Budapest which will carry you to Transylvania. (B) 

DAY 7: Sibiu, Romania

Arrive in the Transylvanian town of Medias and transfer by road to Sibiu. Check in at Hilton Sibiu for 2 nights. (B)

Enjoy a half-day guided tour of Sibiu, then spend your afternoon at leisure. With its red roofs, pastel hues and ornate architecture, Sibiu exemplifies Transylvania’s traditional charm. Highlights here include the gothic Lutheran Cathedral, the legend-laden Bridge of Lies, Piata Mare square with its elegant buildings and enticing taverns, and the famous ‘Eyes of Sibiu’ that peer out of many a rooftop.
