Copenhagen, Gothenburg & Stockholm

This is an excellent introduction to Sweden and its Scandinavian neighbour, Denmark. You begin in Copenhagen, admiring the landmarks of Denmark’s capital with a private tour and canal cruise. Then cross the iconic Oresund Bridge to Sweden and the old heart of Malmö. Continue by train to Gothenburg, with its leafy avenues, charming coffee shops and dashing blue trams. Finally, take the train to Stockholm, where you have two days to take in the sights of Sweden’s capital, including the Vasa Museum and the historic buildings of Gamla Stan.

Your day is spent exploring Copenhagen. First settled by Viking fishermen in the 11th century, the city steadily grew into the cultural and political centre of Denmark. Your three-hour private tour with driver guide reveals many of the landmarks, such as Rosenborg Castle, built in 1607 as a royal summerhouse; Frederik’s Church with its eye-catching green dome; nearby Amalienborg, the official residence of the Danish royals; and the steeple-topped City Hall. Continue your tour by boat, with a private canal cruise that allows you to admire Copenhagen from the water. Overnight in a Deluxe Room at Villa Copenhagen (or similar). (B)

DAY 3: Malmö & Gothenburg, Sweden

Transfer by private vehicle to Malmö, Sweden, crossing the famous Oresund Bridge that carries both trains and cars 8km over water. Upon arrival, enjoy a walking tour of this, Sweden’s third largest city. Worthwhile sights include the main square of Stortorget, with its colourful old houses and cobblestones; the Dutch Renaissance-styled Radhus (‘City Hall’); and the 14th-century church of St. Peter’s, Malmö’s oldest church. Afterwards, take the train to Gothenburg, riding First Class. Upon arrival, you are met and privately transferred to your hotel. Today you explore Sweden’s second-largest city on a guided, three-hour walking tour. Gothenburg – known in Swedish as Göteborg – lies on the west coast of Sweden, and is characterised by leafy avenues, dashing blue trams, seafood restaurants, and cosy coffee shops ideal for a fika stop. Your local guide may take you to see the canal-side Gothenburg City Museum, which houses exhibits that reveal the city’s 400-year history; Gustav Adolfs square, named after the founder of Sweden and watched over by his statue; the nearby 18th-century German Church; and the port – a historically significant centre of trade. You are privately transferred to the railway station, where you catch the train to Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, riding First Class. Upon arrival, you transfer by private vehicle to your hotel. This afternoon, see the city from the water on a canal tour looping around Djurgården island, home to several museums and pretty landscaped gardens. Explore Sweden’s capital city on a three-hour guided tour, assisted by a local guide and private driver. Your tour will include a visit to the historic centre, Gamla Stan, which is home to the baroque Royal Palace – official residence of Sweden’s monarch – and the 13th-century cathedral of Storkyrkan, Stockholm’s oldest church.

This afternoon, enjoy entrance to the Vasa Museum, which preserves the hull of a 17th-century warship. The ship foundered on her maiden voyage, sinking to the depths of Stockholm harbour where it lay undiscovered until the 1950s. Learn about the doomed voyage, the efforts to raise the wreck, and life in 17th-century Stockholm. Overnight in a Standard Room at Hotel At Six (or similar). (B)
