Situated on the eastern shores of Lake Geneva, Montreux is seen as one of the most cosmopolitan cities within Switzerland. The city has many grand belle époque hotels that are dotted along the lakeside promenade. There is an annual jazz festival, which takes place each year, and for visitors with an interest in literature, the nearby Chateau de Chillon inspired numerous poets and writers, including Lord Byron.
Its diverse scenery, with palm trees on one side of the lake and snow-capped mountains peaks on the other, has attracted visitors since the 19th century. Trains take visitors to the summits of the surrounding mountains or you can take a steamboat on Lake Geneva to explore the other resorts along the lake
