Bern, the capital of Switzerland, is the country’s fourth largest city and takes its name, meaning ‘bear’, from a local legend. Located on the banks of the River Aare, the city was founded prior to the country itself and the medieval Old Town was declared a Unesco world heritage site in 1983. The best way to explore the area is to take a stroll through the cobbled streets lined with historic fountains and stone arcades housing individual shops and cafes.
