Basel is Switzerland’s third largest city and its culture has long been influenced by its neighbours, France and Germany. Attractions include the pretty Old Town with cobbled streets and the River Rhine where travellers can take a scenic boat cruise.
The architecture of the city is spectacular and varies from the medieval to the modern. The 12th-century cathedral overlooking the Rhine is a well-preserved example of baroque period architecture. Basel is also home to more than 30 museums, the highest concentration of museums in Switzerland.
