Experience contemporary Scandi lifestyle and food with art historian Dr Anne Anderson who will trace the origin of modern design to the clean, cool lines of classic Nordic interiors. The island of Södermalm, gritty setting for Nordic Noir classic The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, attracted an influx of creatives to become SoFo, one of Vogue’s “coolest street-style neighbourhoods” lined with design shops and cafes. In contrast, historic museums on the island of Djurgården exhibit Scandanavian art in elegant mansions. Discover modern Scandi design at ArkDes and view Nordic art in Sven Harry's Art Museum. Råsunda Filmstaden, established in 1920 as the world’s first film studio attracted legendary director Ingmar Bergman as well as actresses Ingred Bergman and Greta Garbo.
Fly from London (regional connections available) to Stockholm and take a walking food tour across this city of islands to sample Nordic cuisine in bars, cafes and restaurants. Stay 4 nights at the stylish Miss Clara hotel (or similar). This art nouveau former school retains many features after a contemporary renovation. (D)
A peaceful day on the leafy island of Djurgården, which has been royal land since the 15th century. Prins Eugen’s Waldemarsudde, an elegant mansion, was the residence of the artist prince in the early 20th century when he painted there and amassed a collection of contemporary works now displayed in the gallery and gardens. The Thiel Gallery, another former home of an art collector, contains works by Edvard Munch and Carl Larsson. Discover all aspects of the famed Scandi lifestyle in the Nordic Museum, which includes historic room sets. Evening informal lecture and dinner. (B, D)
