Itinerary
Madrid • Ribera del Duero • La Rioja
Fly to Madrid with British Airways. Collect your hire car and drive to La Rioja. En route, stop in the Ribera del Duero area and visit a wine cellar that dates back to the 16th century. Visit Peñafiel Castle and enjoy a wine tasting. Continue to La Rioja, staying the Parador of Sigüenza (or similar) for 1 night. (N)

La Rioja
Full day to discover the wine region of Rioja. Visit a 125-year-old family-run winery and have lunch at the Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture, surrounded by beautiful vineyards. Afternoon at leisure to enjoy the historic town. Stay at Parador Santo Domingo de la Calzada (or similar) for 2 nights. (B, L)
La Rioja
Day at leisure.
La Rioja • Olite
Drive to Marques de Riscal, one of Spain’s finest wineries. Enjoy a gourmet lunch in its Michelinstarred restaurant. Drive on to Olite, a historic town with magnificent castles and palaces. Stay at Parador de Olite, a converted 15th-century castle and now a national monument. (B, L)
Olite • Castle of Javier • Hondarribia
Morning at leisure to explore the ancient streets of Olite. Drive to Hondarribia, visiting the Castle of Javier en route. Free time to enjoy Hondarribia, a coastal town on the French border. Stay overnight at the majestic The Parador de Hondarribia, set in an impressive 10th-century castle overlooking the Bidasoa estuary. (B)
San Sebastián
Make the short drive along the Basque coast to the town of San Sebastián. Sample some of the fabulous food on offer in the city’s bars and taverns on a pintxos tour with a local guide, followed by time at leisure to explore independently. Stay overnight at the Villa Soro (or similar). (B, L)
Bilbao
Drive along the coast to Bilbao. Free time to enjoy the city including the world-famous Guggenheim Museum and the museum of Basque wine, known as txacoli. Overnight in Bilbao, staying at the Barceló Bilbao Nervión (or similar). (B)
Fly home
Drive to Bilbao airport, drop off your hire car and fly home. (B)
