Day 1: Fly to Madrid • Toledo

Fly to Madrid, pick up your hire car at the airport and drive to the Unesco-listed city of Toledo. Stay 2 nights at the Parador de Toledo with views over the old town. (N)

Day 2: Toledo

Full day at leisure to explore the diverse sights of the former capital of Spain. During the middle ages, Toledo flourished as a city where Muslims, Jews and Christians peacefully coexisted. (B)

Day 3: Jaen • Granada

Morning drive to Granada via Jaen, renowned for its olive oil and the medieval Santa Catalina Castle. Stay 2 nights at the Parador de Granada, set within the grounds of the Alhambra complex. (B)

Day 4: Granada

Full day at leisure to visit the magnificent Moorish stronghold of the Alhambra Palace, the Arab-Jewish quarter of Albaicin and the Generalife gardens. (B)

Day 5: Ronda

Morning drive to the town of Ronda. Set either side of a gaping gorge in the mountains, it has one of the most dramatic settings in all of Spain. Stay overnight at the Parador de Ronda, overlooking the gorge itself. (B)

Day 6: Ronda • Carmona

Morning at leisure to relax or visit the bullring and its museum. Afternoon drive to Carmona. Stay 2 nights at the Parador de Carmona, set in a 14th-century Moorish fortress. (B)

Day 7: Carmona

Day at leisure to explore this picturesque hilltop town dotted with palaces, majestic Mudéjar churches and two Moorish forts. Alternatively visit Seville, approximately 40 minutes by car. (B)

Day 8: Zafra • Mérida

Morning drive to Mérida, via the town of Zafra, known as Little Seville due its Moorish heritage and pretty white houses. Afternoon at leisure to explore Mérida, the capital of the Extremadura region, renowned for its Roman ruins including a Roman theatre and Temple of Diana. Stay overnight at the Parador de Mérida, set in an 18th-century former convent. (B)

Day 9: Madrid • Fly home

Drive to Madrid airport and drop off your hire car. Fly home. (B)

    Parador de Toledo

    Set atop the Cerro del Emperador (Emperor's Hill) in the south of Toldeo, the Parador de Toledo is a converted manor house offering wonderful views of the city. The spacious interiors feature high, beamed ceilings and are furnished with rugs, copperware and decorative tiles that recall the Moorish influences of the area. The hotel has an outdoor swimming pool and the restaurant offers alfresco dining. Features: 79 rooms & suites, restaurant, shop, garden, outdoor swimming pool.   • Parador de Ronda
    Parador de Ronda

    In a prime position next to Ronda's famous Puente Nuevo Bridge and close to the Town centre, the Parador de Ronda was built in 1761. The hotel occupies the former Town Hall. Its setting offers excellent views of the 'Cut', the river gorge below. It has 70 rooms, an outdoor swimming pool, bar and an Andalusian restaurant to sample the local traditional dishes.

    Parador de Granada

    Located in the grounds of the Alhambra, the Parador de Granada is situated in a 15th century converted convert. Its architecture and décor is a combination of Arabic, Christian and Andalusian and there are 40 rooms designed in simple classic style and colours. There is a restaurant and dining room, which offers typical regional specialities and has a summer outdoor patio area.
