The origins of Leon date back to the first century, but it is renowned for being one of the most important towns to visit for pilgrims on the route to Santiago. Some of the best examples of Spanish gothic and Romanesque architecture are located in the city. The Cathedral of Santa Maria de la Regla is a fine example of the gothic style, with a lavishly decorated western facade and more than 100 stained glass windows, some dating back to the 13th century.
