Due to the enormous size of the country, it’s not easy to give general advice on the best time to visit Russia, as it depends very much upon the area which you are travelling to. Overall, the remoteness of many areas from the sea results in a continental climate, with warm to hot dry summers and very cold winters.
The summer months of May to September are possibly the best time to explore the cities of St Petersburg and Moscow, as well as the Golden Ring. Additionally, in St Petersburg the days are so long in June that you can experience the midnight sun. During this season the city has its annual White Nights Festival. Winter months through from October to March can be very cold, but don’t dismiss this time of year – crisp blue skies and blankets of snow can be quite magical if you wrap up warm.
