Rail journeys in Russia

When most people think of luxury trains in Russia, they think of the Trans-Siberian train. Travelling along this rail route is undoubtedly the trip of a lifetime, covering a huge distance (9,000km and eight time zones, to be exact) and stopping at a range of remarkable sights along the way. There are, in fact, various routes, with three of them proving to be the most popular: the Trans-Siberian train travels through Russia only, from Moscow to Vladivostok; the Trans-Mongolian train travels from Moscow to Beijing via the capital of Mongolia, Ulan Bator; and the Trans-Manchurian train travels to Beijing via Russia and China. Apart from the Trans-Siberian, a rail trip into the remote and snowy north in December is enchanting and provides a great opportunity to look out for the northern lights. Travel from Moscow to the northern seaports of Arkhangel and Murmansk, finishing in St Petersburg.
