Porto and the Douro valley are
considered to be one of the premier
wine and port producing regions in
the world. This week-long tour stays in
Portugal’s second city for 3 nights and
then finishes in the heart of the Douro
valley for an additional 3 nights. The
itinerary allows time for independent
exploration of the various vineyards and
wineries dotted around the region.

Fly to Porto. Transfer to the Pestana Palácio
do Freixo (or similar) in the historic heart of
the city for a 3-night stay. (N)
You will be collected from your hotel for a
2-hour walking tour through the twisting,
cobbled streets Portugal’s second city. The
main focus of the tour will be Bairro da Se,
the ancient heart of this maritime city. The
remainder of the day is at leisure. (B)
Full day at leisure to explore Porto. On one side
of the river Douro, the old town tumbles down
the hillside in a colourful mix of old buildings,
extravagant baroque churches and shops. On
the other side is Vila Nova de Gaia, with its
musty Port cellars of long-established names
such as Taylor’s and Graham’s. (B)
Collect your hire car (based on group B car
rental) and make your way to the worldfamous
Douro valley, an easy 90-minute drive
inland through the picturesque Portuguese
countryside. Stay for 3 nights at the Vintage
House (or similar). (B)
Moring tour of the local region, with a stop at
an historic quinta for a vineyard tour, followed
by wine tasting. Afternoon at leisure. (B)
Full day at leisure to explore the region at your own pace. Perhaps visit Peso da Regua, officially
the centre of the Port wine-growing region and
enjoy some wine and cheese at one of the many
cellar tours open to the public. Alternatively,
west from here is Mesão Frio, one of the most
charming villages in the region, an ideal place to
relax and soak up the local culture. (B)
Drive to Porto airport and drop off your hire
car. Fly back home. (B)
