The Pestana Cidadela Cascais is housed within the walls of the 16th-century citadel, located in the heart of Cascais. The citadel and the inner fortress were used between the 15th and 17th centuries for defending the mouth of the River Tagus from pirates. Late in the 19th century the citadel became the summer residence of the royal family. Overlooking the harbour, it is 3 minutes' walk from the beach and opposite the World Press Cartoon Museum. Design is a concept throughout the hotel; from the lounge area, which is decorated with 608 swallows, each representing the number of days that the hotel's renovation took to be completed, to "art invasions" of guest rooms, where local artists design their own style of rooms. Dine at the Maris Stella restaurant, which offers an excellent range of seafood, or Taberna da Praca, which offers tapas in a more intimate atmosphere.
