Situated at a latitude of 70 degrees north, the town of Alta benefits from a relatively mild climate. Made up of three areas called Bossekop, Elvebakken and Bukta, Alta achieved official town status on 1 January 2000. The town was destroyed during the second world war while the German battleship Tirpitz used the Altafjorden as a harbour before being damaged by allied air raids.
Today the Alta Museum, with its ancient petroglyphs, is well worth a visit and the lush green Sautso-Alta Canyon, a short journey from the town, offers breathtaking scenery.
