Located on the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid, is the town of Ohrid. This Unesco world heritage site is known as the Macedonian Jerusalem due to the large number of churches. The town has been ruled by numerous empires, Roman, Slav, Bulgarian and Ottoman, due to its location and being a holy centre for the region. The main attractions for visitors to the city are the Gallery of Icons, which has the largest collection of icons in the world, the amphitheatre with some parts dating back to third century BC, Ohrid fortress, the four-storey House of Robev, which houses the national museum and its contents of the history of the area, and the four culturally important churches of the town, St Sophia, Holy Mother of God Peribleptos, St Clement and St John the Theologian at Kaeno.
