Founded on a peninsula facing the Bay of Alghero early in the 12th century by the Genoese Doria family, Alghero has had a strategic position in the Mediterranean Sea throughout its history. The city was seized by Spanish and Catalonian invaders in the 13th century and its original occupants, the Ligurians and the Sardinians, were expelled with such thoroughness that a distinct Algherese Catalan language and culture was established and maintained up until today.
