Milan Located on the plains of Lombardy, Milan is Italy’s second largest city famed for its arts, shopping and food. Founded by Celtic tribes in 7th century BC, the city became the western capital city of the Roman Empire before falling under both Spanish and Austrian rule over the following centuries. Many famous artists were attracted to the city by the Court of Sforzas, including Leonardo da Vinci. The 19th century saw Milan become the centre of the operatic world, with performances by Rossini, Bellini, Verdi and Puccini. Highlights of the city include the cathedral, La Scala opera house and Da Vinci’s Last Supper.
