The region of Lazio is situated in central Italy and is characterised by verdant hillsides in the north giving way to a drier and more rugged landscape in the south, lapped by the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Famous for the Eternal City of Rome and its 3,000 year history, the region of Lazio is also home to a wealth of other ancient historical and cultural sites including the seaside Roman ruins of Ostia Antica (ancient Ostia) and Tivoli. The ruins around the town of Tivoli include the Unesco-recognised estates of Hadrian’s Villa and Villa d’Este approximately 40km from Rome.
