Thingvellir National Park is the oldest national park in Iceland and protects the site of the world’s oldest still-existing parliament, established in 930 AD by Iceland’s founding Norse settlers. Also located within the park’s boundaries are the scenic Thingvellirvatn Lake and, running through the middle of the park, the Almannagjjá rift – meeting point of the North American and European tectonic plates. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Thingvellir National Park today is administered directly by the prime minister’s office in Reykjavík.
