Georgia is by far the most visited nation of the Southern Caucasus, and it is easy to see why. It is home to a rich and ancient culture dating back beyond the founding of Christianity, while is astonishingly diverse landscapes is all easily accessible from its colourful and exotic capital, Tbilisi, where this tour is centred for the week.
Fly from London (regional connections available) to Tbilisi with Georgian Airways. Transfer and stay at the Museum Hotel Orbeliani (or similar) for 7 nights. Welcome drink. (N)Day 2: Tbilisi
A city dominated in turn by traders, warriors, tyrants and dictators, Tbilisi is a blend of cultures where myth and history meet. Enjoy a comprehensive tour of the city including 12th century Metekhi Church & Narikala Fortress which can be accessed by cable car. Afternoon at leisure. Aperitif at Elene Akhvlediani House Museum before independent dinner. (B)Day 3: Kakheti Region - Wine tasting
Today we will explore region of Kakheti – the biggest and the most important winemaking region in Georgia. It was here 8,00 years ago that that grapes were first cultivated to produce wine. Visits today include the 9th century Bodbe Nunnery and the royal town of Sighnaghi. Here enjoy a traditional Georgia cooking class followed by lunch and wine tasting. En route back to Tbilisi stop at the Giuaani Winery, where Geogia’s unique amber wine is produced in clay jugs known as gvevri’s. (B,L)Day 4: Day at leisure
A free day to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the Georgian capital.Day 5: Mtskheta - Gori - Uplistsikhe
Short drive to the ancient Georgian capital of Mtskheta, visit to Jvari, the 6th century cross-shaped monastery built on the top of a cliff, overlooking the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers, followed the fortified 11th century cathedral of Svetitskhoveli and wine tasting at Iago’s Winery. Free time for lunch in Gori and a visit Stalin’s Museum. Final stop at Uplistsikhe know for it’s rock formations and cave dwellings. Return to Tbilisi. (B)Day 6: Georgia’s Mountain Region
A full day excursion form Tbilisi explore Georgia’s mountainous northern region, exploring the Mtiuleti and Khevi provinces and, weather permitted, enjoy fantastic views ‘Mkinvartsveri’ an extinct volcano towering 5047m. Independent lunch in the town of Kazbegi before a jeep safari to the 14th century Gergeti Holy Trinity Church, one of the icons of the nations. Return to Tbilisi for late dinner. (B)Day 7: Departure
Transfer to the airport and return to London. (B)
