The town of Akhaltsikhe is located in the south of Georgia in the Samtskhe-Javakheti province. Over the centuries the town has been governed by both the Ottoman and Russian Empires. The modern day town is now one of the largest in the region and seen as the gateway to the Erusheti and Ramsari mountain ranges. The popular tourist attractions of Akhalkalaki and Vardzia can easily be reached on day excursions from Akhaltsikhe.
