Split, Croatia’s second city, is located on a peninsula in the heart of the Dalmatian coast, set against a backdrop of high coastal mountains. The city itself has a fascinating historic old town with a pretty palm-lined harbour, where you can find the UNESCO site of Diocletian’s Palace, the immense walls of which loom over everything in the area. Split is also a perfect base from which to visit nearby attractions, including the wooded island of Solta, the ancient Roman ruins of Solin and the many old fishing ports of the area.
