Split, Croatia’s second city, is located on a peninsula in the heart of the Dalmatian coast, set against a backdrop of high coastal mountains. The city itself has a fascinating historic old town with a pretty palm-lined harbour, where you can find the UNESCO site of Diocletian’s Palace, the immense walls of which loom over everything in the area. Split is also a perfect base from which to visit nearby attractions, including the wooded island of Solta, the ancient Roman ruins of Solin and the many old fishing ports of the area.

"Hvar was beautiful and a pleasure to visit. The people were welcoming, the weather perfect and the hotel food excellent. It was a very relaxing short break and I didn't want to come home - unusual for me.
