The Istrian peninsula has the Adriatic sea on its western coast and the Kvarner gulf on its eastern shores. The main tourist destinations are the towns of Rovinj, Opatija and Pula. Visitors are drawn to the fine mixture of architecture, which incorporates Venetian and imperial Austro-Hungarian styles, the legacies of both of the major powers that ruled over the peninsula.
