The capital of Bulgaria, Sofia has a unique mixture of classical European architecture combined with Soviet design. The multi-domed Alexander Nevski Cathedral is the largest church in the Balkans and the smaller Boyana Church has ornate frescoes dating back to the 13th century.
One of Bulgaria’s most important historic monuments, Rila Monastery is inscribed as a Unesco world heritage site. The monastery is based around an inner arcaded courtyard with the Nativity of the Virgin Church with its exterior frescoes and elaborate iconostasis being the focal point of any visit.
Located in the northern central district of Bulgaria, the regional town of Veliko Turnovo offers a fascinating glimpse into the past history of the country. The medieval stronghold of Tsarevets dominates the city’s skyline and offers excellent views of the surrounding countryside.
Located on the Black Sea coast, the origins of this busy commercial centre date back over 3,000 years. There are still remnants of Roman, Greek, Byzantine and Ottoman ruins and fortifications to be viewed in the city and along the coastline.
