There are many things to do in Bulgaria on a tailor-made itinerary. Starting in the capital, Sofia, take a morning tour to visit the Roman ruins of Serdica and the multi-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. We also recommend that you enter the National Historical Museum to discover its collection of Thracian treasures of gold and silver.
From Sofia, a full-day visit to the Unesco-listed 10th-century Rila monastery is most certainly a highlight of Bulgaria. As well as the pretty town of Plovdiv – the European Capital of Culture 2019. Here you can take a walking tour of Old Plovdiv and explore the mix of ancient Roman ruins, grand 19th-century mansions and contemporary coffee houses. Nearby to Plovdiv, take a visit to the 10th-century Bachkovo monastery and end your evening in the village of Brestovitsa for wine tasting and dinner.
If you’re interested in traveling to the Black Sea, pass by the historical town of Nessebâr, nestled on an islet just off the coast.
From here you can continue to travel on to Varna, where you can take a sightseeing tour of Bulgaria’s maritime capital – discovering highlights such as Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral, the Archaeological Museum and the huge Monument of Bulgarian-Soviet Friendship, perched high above the city.
Another town of Bulgaria you can visit on a tailor-made itinerary is Veliko Târnovo – take a walking tour to explore the Tsarevets fortress, citadel of the Second Bulgarian Empire, and you can also visit the village of Arbanassi.
Lastly, if you’d prefer to end your travels in Bulgaria with some down time, we recommend a stay at the Zornitza Family Estate in southern Bulgaria to explore the viticulture of Bulgaria. Here you can visit their three wineries and indulge in wine tasting and a four-course dinner. Other optional excursions include hot air ballooning over the estate, or take a day trip to Greece to visit either Thessaloniki or Ouranoupolis. Or if you’d prefer to relax, take advantage of the outdoor pool and spa.
