Located just a few kilometres from the Polish border, Brest was where Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa – the invasion of the USSR. After just six days Brest Fortress fell, leaving the civilian population to perish. Today this fortress is the centrepiece of Brest, a Hero City of the Soviet Union – an honorary title awarded for outstanding heroism during world war two. The highlight here is the Courage monument, an imposing statute of a Red Army solider almost 100 feet high.
