An important maritime and commercial seaport with connections to Italy, the town of Vlora is one of the oldest cities in Albania and was founded by the Greeks in the 6th century BC. The city has been under foreign occupation at numerous points throughout its history and was the capital of the country in 1912. During the second world war the city was ruled first by the Italians and then the Germans.
