Accommodation rating: Good Standard
Located close to the Nicaragua-Costa Rica border near the small town of San Juan del Sur, Morgan's Rock is an delightful ecolodge with a great deal of character. Fifteen rustic yet elegant wooden bungalows with private decks are dotted around a dry tropical forest and are close to a sandy beach, which plays host to nesting turtles in season (usually August to January). The lodge is also part of a working hacienda and re-forestation project, which works closely with the local community. As well as nature walks, there are boat and fishing trips along the Pacific Coast and a variety of hands-on ecological and agricultural tours available. These reforested lands, together with the nature reserve and estuary, host a variety of forest animals such as howler monkeys, sloths, white tipped deer and many birds native to the subtropical region. Morgan's Rock stands out for blending high standards of luxury with sustainable development in an area of great natural beauty.
